UN Eritrea 2023Annual Report
We are pleased to present the 2023 Annual Report of the United Nations in Eritrea. This report provides a detailed overview of the significant developments and outcomes stemming from the collaborative efforts of the United Nations Country Team (UNCT), the Government of the State of Eritrea, and our development partners. Together, we are working towards the realization of Eritrea’s national development priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Eritrea's notable accomplishments during the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) era form a strong foundation for its ongoing commitment to the SDGs and broader development agenda. The nation has distinguished itself by achieving critical MDGs, such as significantly reducing maternal mortality and achieving near-universal immunization rates. These successes pave the way for further advancements towards the SDGs.
As we approach the midpoint of the joint Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (2022-2026), we celebrate significant progress in areas including food security, essential social services, social protection, and sustainable management of natural resources. However, we must also recognize the challenges that Eritrea faces. These include shared global issues like rising inequalities and food and energy costs, as well as unique obstacles such as unilateral sanctions and regional instability. These external factors hinder sustainable development and call for renewed strategies and efforts.
Despite these challenges, Eritrea remains firmly committed to its development goals, ensuring that the needs of vulnerable groups are prioritized and that no one is left behind. This dedication is rooted in the principles of gender equality and adherence to international standards and obligations.
Looking forward, we are resolved to accelerate progress on the Cooperation Framework and to harness opportunities for strategic partnerships at global, regional, and national levels. Our aim is to foster transformative outcomes that enhance the lives of all Eritreans.
We would like to express our sincere appreciation to the dedicated members of the UNCT, including both resident and non-resident agencies, for their relentless efforts and unwavering commitment. Their work in supporting the Government and people of Eritrea on their development journey has been crucial in driving positive change and fostering progress.
We invite you to explore this report, which embodies the collective commitment and determination of the United Nations and its partners in advancing the development aspirations of the people of Eritrea. Together, we can build a brighter future for all.
